Is your serger still in the box or gathering dust in a corner? A serger can really enhance your sewing by sewing and finishing seams in one pass and adding professional-looking edges on fabrics. But they can be a little intimidating. This class will cover basic serging techniques to get you started on your machine. Learn the basic techniques for serging:

  • 4 thread seams
  • Finishing 4 thread seams
  • Switching to 3 thread modes
  • Edge stitching to finish seams sewn on a conventional machine
  • Rolled hems
  • Rounding an outside curve
  • Serging an outside corner

A prerequisite for taking this class is being able to thread your serger from scratch (with no thread in the serger to start). For those who need help with threading, a remedial threading class will be held at Rita’s house in Roswell on Sat., August 8th ($10 donation). If needed, alternate sessions will be arranged.
A fabric kit will be provided. You will need to bring:

  • Serger with plug and foot pedal
  • Manual for the serger
  • 4 cones of serger thread in different colors
  • Extra needles for serger
  • Screwdriver for changing needles
  • tweezers
  • scissors
  • 3 ring binder – you will be getting plastic sleeves to hold stitching samples
  • Paper, pen and pencil

Teacher: Rita Mantel. Longtime ASG member and current treasurer, Rita owned a sewing machine store for many years and is well-versed in sergers. She has worked with a wide variety of them over the years.
